Einige Vögel überleben die quälerischen Bedingungen nicht und sterben unterwegs.
Das europäische Recht gibt keine Mindestgrößen von Transportbehältern vor. In der Praxis sind sehr niedrige Transportkäfige üblich. Sie verhindern, dass die Puten mit aufrechtem Körper und ausgestrecktem Kopf in natürlicher Position stehen können. Manche Behälter sind so niedrig, dass die Puten nicht mal im Hocken ihren Kopf in die Höhe strecken können.
Viele Puten leiden bereits aufgrund der Überzüchtung und den Haltungsbedingungen an einer Form der Beinschwäche (tibiale Dyschondroplasie), Lahmheit, Fußballenentzündungen und Brusthautläsionen. Die niedrigen Transportbehälter verschlimmern ihren Zustand aufgrund der Bewegungseinschränkung.
