How we are making progress towards a world in which all living beings are respected.

Strengthening animal rights with research and facts

We at Expertise for Animals have a clear mission: We are the interface between scientific knowledge and actors and organizations that advocate for animals.

We are dedicated to advising animal movements with sound, animal-related information.

Our vision is ambitious yet essential: a world in which all sentient beings have the freedom to lead a self-determined life and are respected as individuals.

We founded Expertise for Animals in 2021 out of a common motivation: to combine scientific research with animal welfare and animal rights work. The founding process was a remarkable time, characterized by months of intensive preparation and countless conversations.

Together, we meticulously laid the groundwork for what would become Expertise for Animals: a trusted source of evidence-based information to support the animal movement in achieving positive change for nonhuman animals.

How we integrate science into work for animals

We believe that sound, evidence-based approaches are critical to making effective change.

Our team brings together expertise from different fields, such as animal welfare science, biology, veterinary medicine and ethology, to support and empower animal movements.

Our approach is based on a clear impact model, also called Theory of Change. It focuses our activities on two main short-term goals:

  • Strengthening animal advocacy: We offer free consultations and freely available animal-related content to empower organizations and individuals working for animal rights.
  • Ensuring the use of scientific knowledge: We make scientific research accessible and usable and ensure that it is used to better advocate for nonhuman animals, rather than to optimize existing systems of exploitation.

Our greatest successes

Since our foundation, we have made significant progress. Here are some of our notable successes:

Literature research on domestic and wild pigs

In April 2024, we supported the Vegan Bullerbyn e. V. farm with a literature search. The veterinary authority objected to the fact that the wild boar Gezi was living "alone" in a group of domestic pigs on the sanctuary.

We reviewed the scientific literature on the social behavior of wild and domestic pigs. Based on our analysis, we provided an assessment of the compatibility of wild boars and domestic pigs living together.

Our analysis supports the farm in presenting factual arguments to the state authorities in favor of wild and domestic pigs living together in their care. Our literature research confirms the reality at the sanctuary: Gezi is well integrated into the group.

White paper on tethering

In August 2023, we published our first white paper Breakning the chains: A comprehensive investigation into the tethering of cattle.

Our report and the articles derived from it on the legal situation of tethering and the negative effects of tethering on cattle are a cornerstone of our work.

Many organizations and activists use our background information in their efforts to abolish tethering.

We make the results freely available. They expand the knowledge base of animal movements, simplify access to research and raise the standard of readily available knowledge.

Position paper on stunning methods in pig slaughter

At the beginning of 2023, we prepared a comprehensive position paper on stunning methods in the slaughter of "fattening pigs" for the Albert Schweitzer Stiftung für unsere Mitwelt. It is characterized by its extensive sources and scope.

Position paper on the transportation of turkeys

Similarly, for the French organization L214, we have reviewed the scientific literature on the transport of turkeys in forced squatting position to support their efforts to revise European transport regulations.

Growing together

Our team has gained strength with Stephanie Kowalski, an experienced veterinarian who joined us in September 2023. Her experience enriches Expertise for Animals enormously.

Stephanie strengthens our ability to support the animal welfare movements with high-quality expertise.

The Team at Expertise for Animals

We attach great importance to continuous learning. In addition to professional training, we take part in conferences such as the annual CARE conference in Warsaw. It allows us to exchange ideas, work together on projects and keep up to date with the latest advances in animal welfare and animal movements.

Support us in our mission

At Expertise for Animals, we use science to create a better world for all sentient beings. Our work is driven by a deep respect for animals and a belief in their right to a self-determined life.

We invite you to support us on this journey. Whether you support our work with a donation, take advantage of our consultations or help us spread the word about our work, every action contributes to creating a more just and compassionate world for animals.

Thank you for joining us on this journey!
